My Enemy

I tried to love my enemy
I invited him into my house
Offered a glass of chilled juice
Talked about holidays and family
(But I didn’t bore him with photos)
Encouraged him to chat about himself
I’d hoped that it would humanise me
In his heart.

I knew straight away I’d failed
So
I killed him with kindness
