General de Gaulle’s war aims, 1941

“Do you think I am interested in England’s winning the war? I am not- I am interested only in France’s victory,” de Gaulle said provocatively (to General Spears his British liaison officer.)

After this was reported to Churchill he cut off de Gaulle’s phone lines at his London headquarters and refused to speak to him for weeks. Needless to relate de Gaulle never forgot the humiliation and retaliated when Britain wanted to join the EEC.
